Commemorating Maryam Al-Mirghaniyah in Sudan.
Al-Sharifa Maryam Al-Mirghaniyah was the granddaughter of Imam Muhammad Uthman Al-Mirghani Al-Khatm, the founder of the first institute for women's religious education in the city of Suakin in 1941. She established mosques with attached (Khalawi) (Quranic schools) for women's education in the cities of (Jebeit), (Tokar), (Al-Salloum Station), (Tahameem), and (Sinkat), where she was later buried. She also founded two (Khalawi) in Sinkat and another in Suakin.
In addition to her significant role in education, Al-Sharifa Maryam played a major social role. She devoted herself to caring for the poor and needy, establishing (Takiyyas) (charitable kitchens) to feed them in her mosques at a time when poverty and hardship were widespread in the region. She also dedicated herself to fulfilling people's needs, earning the title "Baagad Baseet" in the local eastern Sudanese language, meaning "the lady who never turns anyone away."
The "Hawliya of Al-Sharifa Maryam"—her annual commemoration—is held in "Sinkat" every year, starting from the afternoon of the first day of "Rajab". Thousands of followers and visitors gather to participate in this grand annual celebration.
